Low-Voltage Sign Lighting for a Vancouver, WA Apartment Community

A monument sign that nobody can read after dark is doing half a job. This one in central Vancouver fronts the entrance to Bridge Creek Apartments and Totem Pole Estates on a busy road, and Newman Electric put in new low-voltage lighting so it works at the hour people are actually driving home.

Why low voltage for a sign

Line voltage would light the sign too. Low voltage is the better fit for a freestanding structure in a landscaped bed, for reasons that are mostly about what happens after the install:

• Safer to work on and around, which matters when the landscapers are running string trimmers past it every week
• Shallower burial requirements for the supply run, so the bed does not have to be trenched like a service run
• Simpler to extend if the property adds path or bed lighting to the same entrance later
• The transformer is one serviceable point, mounted at the post rather than buried somewhere nobody documented

The transformer and controls went in a weatherproof enclosure low on the timber post, which keeps them out of the sightline from the road and puts everything a maintenance tech needs in one place.

Aiming matters more than wattage

The fixtures sit on arms above the sign and point down across the face. That geometry is the whole job.

Get it wrong and one of two things happens: the sign has a hot spot at the top and falls off into darkness at the bottom, or the light spills past the sign and into the road, which is both wasted and unwelcome. Arms set off the face at the right distance let each fixture cover its share of the sign evenly and keep the light on the sign.
