Scope of Work

  • Cut in four recessed lights in an existing textured bedroom ceiling
  • Laid them out around the existing ceiling fan
  • Added a pull-chain lampholder with a built-in outlet in the attic

This Brush Prairie bedroom had a ceiling fan and a smoke alarm overhead, and the fan was the only light in the room. Newman Electric added four recessed lights around the fan, and on the same visit put a pull-chain light with an outlet in the attic, which had no light at all.

Adding recessed lights to an existing ceiling

Retrofitting recessed lights into a finished ceiling is a different job from new construction. There’s no open framing, and the ceiling texture shows every patch. The approach:

  • Lay out between the joists, around the existing fan box, so the light falls evenly instead of bunching in the middle
  • Cut clean holes sized to the fixture so the trim covers the edge and no texture repair is needed
  • Fish the wiring from the existing circuit, so the walls and ceiling stay intact

Modern LED recessed fixtures make this easier than the old cans did, because they need far less room above the ceiling. Our lighting installation page covers how we choose fixtures and dimmers.

Why the attic needed a light

An attic with no light means a flashlight in your teeth every time you check the insulation, chase a leak or store something. The fix is small: a pull-chain lampholder with a built-in outlet mounted on the framing near the access, so there’s light where you climb up and a place to plug in a work light or a fan.

Brush Prairie homes

Rural Brush Prairie homes often have big rooms that were built with one light in the middle or none at all. Adding recessed lighting is one of the simplest ways to fix that without remodeling. See our Brush Prairie service area page for other work in the area, or call 360-828-7143 to plan out the lighting for a room.

Gary and Roman installed canned lighting and a floor electrical outlet, as well as wiring for an AC unit. They were the best! There was a hiccup with one of the projects due to the way my house was constructed. They took the time to ask which work around was preferred rather than just going ahead with what would be easiest for them. They left the areas they worked in clean. They were friendly and professional. I highly recommend!
