Chandelier Hung at an 18-Foot Ceiling in Salmon Creek, Vancouver, WA
A large wagon-wheel chandelier installed over the stairwell landing of a Salmon Creek home, worked at an 18-foot ceiling from the existing box location without scaffolding the whole entry.
Ceiling Height
18 feet
Location
Open stairwell landing
Fixture
Wagon-wheel chandelier, chain hung
Scope of Work
- Installed a customer-supplied wagon-wheel chandelier at an 18-foot ceiling
- Worked the existing box location over an open stairwell landing
- Set the chain and canopy so the fixture hangs level and at the right height
The fixture was the easy part. On this home in Salmon Creek, the chandelier went over an open stairwell landing at an 18-foot ceiling, which turns a one-hour swap into a job about access, weight and getting the hang height right the first time.
Why an 18-foot ceiling changes the job
At eight feet you work off a step ladder and adjust as you go. At eighteen, over a stairwell, almost nothing about that holds:
- There is no floor under the fixture. The stair opening means a standard ladder set is not an option, so the approach has to be planned before anything is unboxed.
- Everything is a round trip. Forgetting a part is not a walk to the van, it is a full climb down and back up. Fixtures get assembled on the ground and go up complete.
- You get one shot at the hang height. Adjusting chain length after the canopy is up means going back to the ceiling, so the drop gets worked out before the fixture leaves the floor.
The box matters more than the fixture
A chandelier this size is a weight hanging off a ceiling box for the next twenty years, and it is the box, not the fixture, that has to be right. The support has to be rated for the actual weight of the fixture, and on a vaulted or stairwell ceiling the box also has to deal with the angle it is mounted at.
That check happens before anything gets hung. If the existing support is not rated for what the customer bought, that becomes part of the job rather than something discovered when the fixture is already at height. Most of what makes light fixture installation go quickly or slowly is decided in the first ten minutes at the box.
Where the fixture ends up hanging
Hang height on a stairwell chandelier is a judgment call, not a spec. It has to clear the landing rail, read correctly from the floor below, and not sit so high it disappears into the vault. On this one the drop puts the fixture in the middle of the open space, so it reads from the entry, from the landing and from the stairs.
