Fixture Package Hung Through a Custom Home in Ridgefield, WA

On a custom home, the fixture package is the last electrical work anyone does and the first thing every visitor sees. This house in the Ridgefield area had a full schedule of decorative pieces to hang, and Newman Electric worked through it: entry, stair, great room, porch, halls and baths.

Feature fixtures are set from the room, not the plan

The entry chandelier, the stair fixture and the great room piece are the three that people remember, and none of them can be positioned off a drawing alone.

Height is the variable that matters:

• An entry chandelier has to clear the door swing and read correctly from outside when the door is open
• A stair fixture has to work from the bottom of the flight and from the landing, which are two different sightlines
• A great room piece over a vault has to sit low enough to be part of the room and high enough not to dominate it

Each one gets hung, looked at from the places people actually stand, and adjusted before the canopy is fixed. That is slow, and it is the whole difference between a fixture that looks specified and one that looks placed.

The covered porch got lantern pendants dropping from a painted shiplap ceiling.

Shiplap makes this fussier than it looks. Boxes have to land on structure rather than between boards, the canopy has to sit flat against a surface that is not perfectly flat, and the fixture has to align with the boards rather than fight them. Getting the box in the right place happens at rough-in, months before anyone sees the fixture, which is the argument for the same contractor doing both phases.

Sconces beside the mirror

The baths got paired sconces flanking each mirror rather than a single bar above it.

That choice is worth a note because it is a lighting decision, not a styling one. A bar above a mirror lights the top of a face and casts everything below it into shadow. Sconces at either side, at roughly face height, light a face evenly, which is what a bathroom mirror is for.

It costs two boxes instead of one and it has to be decided at rough-in. Our approach to decorative fixture installation is to raise that conversation while the walls are still open.

Recessed lighting does the work in between

Behind the feature pieces, recessed lighting runs through the kitchen, the halls and the living space, doing the actual job of making the house usable after dark.

That is the right division of labour in a house at this level: cans provide the light, decorative fixtures provide the character, and the two get laid out together so neither is compensating for the other.
