Fixture Package Hung Through a Custom Home in Ridgefield, WA
We hung all the decorative lights in a new custom home in Ridgefield. Chandeliers over the entry and stairs, lanterns on the shiplap porch ceiling, sconces in the baths and halls, and recessed lights through the rest of the house.

- Hung chandeliers at the entry, the stairs and the great room

- Put pairs of sconces at the bathroom mirrors and in the halls
- Set recessed lights in the kitchen, halls and living room
On a custom home, the decorative lights are the last electrical work and the first thing anybody notices. This house in the Ridgefield area had a full list of fixtures to hang, and we worked through all of it: entry, stairs, great room, porch, halls and baths.
Big fixtures get set standing in the room
The entry chandelier, the stair chandelier and the great room fixture are the three people remember, and you can’t place any of them off the drawings alone.
The height is what matters:
- An entry chandelier has to clear the door and look right from outside with the door open
- A stair chandelier has to look right from the bottom of the stairs and from the landing
- A great room fixture under a vaulted ceiling has to hang low enough to be part of the room but not so low it takes over
We hang each one, look at it from where people actually stand, and adjust it before the canopy goes tight. It takes longer, and it’s what makes them look like they belong.

The covered porch got lantern pendants hanging from a painted shiplap ceiling.
Shiplap makes it trickier. The boxes have to hit framing, not land between boards. The canopy has to sit flat on a surface that isn’t perfectly flat. And the lights have to line up with the boards. Where the boxes go gets decided at rough-in, months before anybody sees a light. That’s why it helps to have the same electrician do both.
Sconces next to the mirror
The baths got a sconce on each side of the mirror instead of one bar light above it.
That’s about light, not looks. A bar above the mirror lights the top of your face and puts shadows under everything else. Sconces on each side at about face height light your face evenly, which is the point of a bathroom mirror.
It takes two boxes instead of one, and you have to decide at rough-in. When we do decorative light installation, we bring it up while the walls are still open.
Recessed lights do the rest
Behind the big fixtures, recessed lights run through the kitchen, halls and living room. They’re what you actually see by after dark.
That’s how it should split in a house like this. The cans give you light, the decorative pieces give the house its look, and we lay them out together so neither one is making up for the other.

I called Ryan because he was recommended from one of my neighbors. And, as it turns out, others in my neighborhood have also hired his company. Ryan and Anthony arrived at the agreeable scheduled time. I explained to them that my ‘waterfall pond switch’ and a ‘light switch’ were not working. After testing the old switches both Ryan and Anthony agreed that the switches should be replaced. Ryan told me he could go to Hm Depot for the parts that were needed and return in 45 minutes to install it, if I agreed. 45 minutes later, Ryan and Anthony returned with the parts in hand. These 2 gentlemen are a great team, they work well together. They have worked together for several years. They really impressed me! I have already decided to contact them in a few weeks to install my fire alarm system.
