Scope of Work
- Removed the melted receptacle and scorched cover plate
- Checked the box and conductors for heat damage
- Installed a new receptacle and plate
An A/C unit in this Vancouver home was plugged into an ordinary wall outlet, and eventually the outlet gave up. When Newman Electric pulled it, the receptacle was melted, its contacts scorched, and the cover plate and drywall around the box were stained with soot.
Why outlets melt under an A/C
An air conditioner draws a heavy current for hours at a time. That’s not a problem for a good connection, but it’s a big problem for a weak one.
Heat at an outlet comes from resistance at a connection, not from the load alone:
- A backstabbed wire (pushed into the hole on the back instead of wrapped on the screw) has a small contact area
- A worn receptacle whose contacts no longer grip the plug blades firmly
- A loose terminal screw that has worked free over years of heating and cooling
Under a long, heavy load, any of those gets hot, and the heat makes the connection worse. Eventually the plastic melts. Our post on a burning smell at an outlet covers the warning signs that come first.
The repair
With the power off at the outdoor Square D Homeline panel, we:
- Removed the melted receptacle and the scorched plate
- Checked the box and the conductors for heat damage
- Trimmed back any heat-damaged conductor ends to clean copper
- Installed a new receptacle with the conductors on the terminal screws, and a new plate
If heat damage runs further up the cable, the repair means replacing that section back to the next box, which is why we check before closing up.
If your A/C is on a regular outlet
A small A/C unit on a 15-amp general-use outlet is common and usually fine, as long as the outlet is in good shape and nothing else heavy shares the circuit. A larger unit, or one that trips breakers, is a sign it needs a dedicated circuit.

What customers say about our troubleshooting work
Oh my gosh! I called Newman Electric about power to our bathroom outlets not working. They were in our neighborhood, North Image, and said we will be there in 15 MINUTES!! They diagnosed the problem (an outside CGFI outlet was tripped when our siding was washed) and put everything back together. We had forgotten about the outside CGFI and didn't know it was part of the bathroom wiring. They didn't charge us anything! We are so excited to share that Ryan and Anthony are the BEST! Thanks Newman Electric! You guys rock!
This guy! Newman Electric I cannot even tell you how much Ryan rocks. Called him Thanksgiving Eve because my range caused my whole breaker box (from the 80's) to go out. I was pretty bummed.. what an awful feeling having 20+ people coming over the next day i was freaking out. Not only did Ryan and his co worker come over and make it work. They were also awesome about it. I do not have enough gratitude to ever thank them enough. I highly recommend Newman Electric to everyone they are great and awesome.
