A shop building is not a garage with better lighting. Once it has a bath, a gym, a mini split and a sauna circuit, it is a small house that happens to have an overhead door, and it has to be wired like one. This 1,062 square foot new build in Hazel Dell, WA got a full rough-in and, weeks later, a final trim in almond.
Why 14 high bays instead of more cans
The shop bay got 14 high bay fixtures rather than a scaled-up version of the recessed lighting used in the finished rooms.
High bays are the right tool once ceiling height gets away from you. A recessed can throws a cone that is designed for an eight-foot ceiling; put the same fixture at shop height and you get bright circles on the floor with gloom between them. A high bay is built to spread light from further up, which is what you want over a bay where somebody is going to be working on something at floor level.
The skylights along the ridge do the daytime work, and the high bays take over when they stop.
The circuits that make it a building, not a garage
Rough-in is where the building’s future gets decided, because everything gets harder once the walls close:
- A sauna circuit sized up to 40 amps, run during rough-in even though the sauna comes later
- A dedicated mini split circuit for the head that conditions the finished space
- A Panasonic WhisperFan in the bath, because a quiet fan is the one that actually gets used
- A heat detector in the garage and a smoke detector in the gym, both tied into the existing house detectors so they alarm together
That last one is the detail people miss on an outbuilding. Detection that only sounds in the shop is detection nobody hears from the house at two in the morning.
Rough-in and trim are two different visits, deliberately
This job appears twice in our schedule, months apart, and that is how it should be. Rough-in happens before insulation and drywall. Trim happens after paint, when the fixtures, devices and covers go on and the finish colour is finally known, which is why the closing line on the work order is simply “almond”.
Splitting it means the wire is in the right place before it is inaccessible, and the visible parts get installed when they will not be damaged by the trades that follow. Our guide to how shop and garage circuits get planned covers what to decide at rough-in.
What this costs you if you skip it
The single most expensive mistake on an outbuilding is under-wiring it at rough-in because the finished use is not settled yet. Sauna, EV charger, welder, compressor, mini split: any of them added later means a trench, a wall opened, or a subpanel that would have been unnecessary.
Getting the shop and outbuilding circuits in while the framing is open is the cheapest capacity you will ever buy.
