Soffit Demo and Canless LED Retrofit Off a Vancouver, WA Kitchen

Most recessed lighting jobs are really ceiling jobs. On this east Vancouver remodel the room off the kitchen still had a dropped soffit running around it, which fixed where light could go and made the space read smaller than it was. Newman Electric took the soffit out and put in 10 to 12 canless LED downlights laid out to match the kitchen next door.

Why the soffit came out first

A dropped soffit is a decision somebody made in 1985 about where the cabinets ended. Once it goes, the ceiling becomes one plane and the lighting can be laid out for the room rather than around an obstruction.

That is the sequence that matters: demo, then layout, then cut. Laying out downlights before the soffit is gone means designing around something that is about to disappear.

Canless, and what that changes

Canless LED downlights are a thin housing and a driver that go up through a hole in the drywall, instead of a metal can that has to fit in the joist bay.

Practically, that means:

• They fit where a can will not, which matters in a retrofit where you are working between existing joists, ducts and plumbing
• Less ceiling cavity is taken up, so insulation coverage stays better in a top-floor ceiling
• The trim sits nearly flush, which is what makes a retrofit read as original rather than added

The trade is that the driver is part of the fixture, so a failure is a fixture replacement rather than a bulb. For a room getting a dozen of them, that is still the right call, and it is the standard way we handle recessed lighting installation in an existing ceiling.

Matching the kitchen is the whole brief

The scope was to make the new space match the kitchen, and matching is more specific than it sounds. Spacing, distance off the walls, and colour temperature all have to line up, or the two rooms read as two projects with a doorway between them.

Colour temperature is the one people underestimate. Two rooms lit at different Kelvin values look wrong even when nobody can say why, and it is worth checking what is already in the kitchen before ordering anything for the room next door. Switches get confirmed before they get cut

The switch layout was reworked as part of the job, and it was walked with the homeowner on site before anything was cut into finished wall.

That step costs ten minutes and saves an argument. Where a switch lands is one of the few things in a remodel that a homeowner interacts with every single day, and it is much cheaper to move a mark on the drywall than a box in the wall.
