Recessed Outlet for a Wall-Mounted iPad in Vancouver, WA

We put a recessed clock outlet in the wall so a wall-mounted iPad could plug in without the plug sticking out behind it. While we were there we fixed wiring that was showing at the bathroom lights.

Scope of Work

  • Took out the low-voltage bracket in the wall where the iPad mounts
  • Put in a recessed clock outlet so the plug sits back in the wall
  • Fixed wiring that was showing at the bathroom lights

This Vancouver homeowner wanted power behind a wall-mounted iPad. We put in a recessed clock outlet so the charger plugs in flush with the wall, and we fixed some wiring that was showing at the bathroom lights on the same visit.

Why the bracket had to go

The opening already had a black plastic mounting bracket in it. Those brackets are marked for low voltage only. They’re made for TV, data and speaker cable, and there’s no box behind them. A 120-volt outlet has to sit in a real electrical box, so we took the bracket out and set a box in its place.

Why a clock outlet

A regular outlet puts the plug about an inch out from the wall. That’s fine behind a couch, but a tablet mount sits tight to the wall and the plug ends up pushing it out.

A clock outlet sets the receptacle back into the wall behind a metal plate. The plug goes into the recess, so the iPad mount can sit flat over it. They were made for wall clocks, and they work just as well for tablets, small screens and anything else that hangs flat.

The bathroom lights

The other item on the list was wiring that could be seen at the bathroom light fixtures. We fixed it so nothing is showing at the lights. Wiring that’s out in the open at a fixture is worth having looked at, since it usually means something wasn’t put in a box or a cover was left off.
