Scope of Work

  • Ran a dedicated 50-amp circuit for the Huum sauna heater
  • Ran a separate 15-amp circuit for the sauna lighting
  • Installed the heater, LED strip lighting and all control modules
  • Deleted an unused RV circuit at the Eaton panel to free up capacity
  • Pulled the L&I permit and coordinated inspection

A sauna is two electrical jobs wearing one coat: a big straightforward heater circuit, and a small fussy one for everything else. On this Washougal, WA property the sauna is a freestanding outdoor unit sitting on gravel a few feet off the house, and Newman Electric handled both halves, from the panel out to the heater, the lights and the control modules inside.

Why the heater gets its own 50-amp circuit

The Huum Drop in this sauna is an electric resistance heater, which means it is a continuous, near-nameplate load for as long as the sauna is heating. That is a very different animal from a receptacle circuit that sees short bursts.

So it gets a home run of its own:

  • A dedicated 50-amp circuit sized for the heater, with nothing else sharing it
  • A disconnect at the sauna, so the unit can be isolated without walking back to the house
  • Conductors sized for the run, not just the breaker, because the sauna sits away from the building

This is the same logic behind dedicated 240V circuits for a range, a hot tub or a charger. The load runs long and hard, so it does not share.

Lighting on its own circuit, deliberately

The lighting, the LED strips and the control modules went on a separate 15-amp circuit rather than being tapped off the heater feed.

That is worth doing for a practical reason: the heater circuit is the one most likely to be switched off, whether at the disconnect or the breaker. Keeping the lights independent means you can see inside a sauna that is powered down, which matters when the room is dark, wet and full of hot stone.

Making room in the panel

Panels fill up. This one was an Eaton with no obvious space left, so two things happened before either new circuit could land:

  1. An unused RV circuit was deleted. It had been dead for a while and was holding two spaces hostage.
  2. A slim breaker went in where the layout allowed it, recovering the width the new circuits needed.

Deleting a dead circuit is the cheapest capacity you will ever find in a panel, and most homes have at least one. It also means the directory finally tells the truth, which is why the label card got rewritten before we left.

Permit and inspection

The work was permitted through L&I and the inspection was coordinated as part of the job. Washougal sits in Clark County outside the City of Vancouver, so electrical permits there go through Labor and Industries rather than a city department. Our breakdown of how electrical permits work in Clark County covers which jurisdiction handles what, and why an unpermitted sauna circuit is a problem you inherit at resale.
