Running power to an outbuilding in a finished backyard is a different job to running it across a bare rural lot. There is a patio, a lawn, planting beds, and a homeowner who will notice every one of them afterwards. This one in Clark County took a 50-amp feeder out to the shed and put the yard back.
Why 50 amps and not more
The Woodland version of this job took a 100-amp panel out to a shop. This one is 50, and the difference is not budget, it is honest sizing.
Feeder size follows the load the building will actually see, and oversizing has real costs: bigger conductors, a bigger trench, and capacity taken out of the house service that the house may want later. Fifty amps is a lot of shed. It runs lights, receptacles, a compressor and a heater without drama.
The right question for a sub panel for an outbuilding is what goes in the building, not what sounds generous.
Grounding and bonding a detached building
This is the part that separates a compliant outbuilding feed from a dangerous one, and it is the part most commonly done wrong on older DIY runs.
A detached structure with its own panel is not simply an extension of the house panel:
- Neutral and ground separate at the sub panel. They are bonded once, at the service, and nowhere else. A sub panel with the bonding screw still in is the classic mistake.
- The building needs its own grounding electrode. The equipment ground running out from the house is not a substitute.
- The equipment ground has to run with the feeder. Relying on a ground rod at the shed alone does not clear a fault.
Getting that wrong means a shed where the metal on everything can sit at a voltage difference from the ground you are standing on. It is not a paperwork detail.
Re-piping instead of reusing
The run was re-piped rather than pulled through what was already in the ground.
Existing buried raceway is a tempting shortcut and usually a bad bet. You do not know its condition, whether it is full of water, whether it was ever sized for what you are about to pull, or whether it was listed for burial in the first place. Pulling new conductors into a raceway you cannot inspect means finding out at the worst moment.
Putting the yard back
The trench crossed a paver patio edge and a lawn, and the spoil went onto tarps rather than onto the grass.
That single decision is what makes the restoration possible. Soil dumped straight onto turf kills it and mixes with it, and no amount of raking afterwards puts it right. Our guide to running power to a detached building covers the planning side, and the yard work is genuinely half of it.
