Whole-House Remodel Trim-Out in Yacolt, WA

Trim is the visit where everything that has been hidden since rough-in becomes the thing people actually see. This full remodel in Yacolt, WA came back to us after paint, and Newman Electric set the lighting through a new kitchen, a vaulted living space and the hallways connecting them.

Laying out cans on a vaulted ceiling

A flat ceiling makes lighting layout close to arithmetic. A vault does not.

On a slope, the same spacing that works flat throws light unevenly, because every fixture is a different distance from the wall it is washing and from the floor below it. Cans set on a vault have to be laid out along the slope with that in mind, and aimed correctly if they are adjustable.

Get it right and the room reads evenly lit. Get it wrong and you get a bright band across the middle of the slope and dark at the ridge and the eave, which no amount of dimming fixes.

Where a can is the wrong fixture

The opening between two rooms got a linear LED rather than another recessed can, which is the sort of choice that only comes up at trim when you are standing in the finished space.

A downlight over a doorway lights the threshold and nothing else. A linear fixture running with the opening lights the passage through it. Small distinction, and it is the difference between a hallway that feels connected to the room and one that feels like a tunnel.

Why trim happens after paint

There is a real temptation to set fixtures early and be done. Doing it after the painters means:

1. Trims sit against finished ceiling, not against a ceiling that is about to be sprayed
2. Nothing gets overspray on it, which is the most common way a new fixture ends up looking second-hand
3. The final colour is known, so device plates and fixture finishes are chosen against what is actually on the wall

That sequencing is most of what separates a clean remodel trim-out from one that needs touching up afterwards.

Rural Clark County and the permit question
