Whole-House Remodel Trim-Out in Yacolt, WA

This full remodel in Yacolt, WA came back to us after paint. We set the lights in the new kitchen, the vaulted living room and the hallways between them.

Laying out cans on a vaulted ceiling

On a flat ceiling, laying out cans is mostly simple math. A vaulted ceiling is different.

On a slope, the spacing that works on a flat ceiling lights the room unevenly, because each light is a different distance from the floor and the wall. We lay the cans out along the slope with that in mind, and aim them if they’re adjustable.

Done right, the room’s evenly lit. Done wrong, you get a bright stripe across the middle and dark spots at the top and bottom, and a dimmer won’t fix it.

Where a can doesn’t work

The opening between two rooms got a linear LED instead of another can. That’s a call you make at trim, standing in the finished room.

A can over a doorway lights the floor right under it and that’s it. A linear light running along the opening lights the whole walk-through, so the hallway feels like part of the room instead of a tunnel.

Why we trim after paint

It’s tempting to hang lights early and be done. Doing it after the painters means:

1. The trims sit against a finished ceiling, not one that’s about to get sprayed
2. No paint overspray on the new lights
3. The color’s picked, so we can match the cover plates and fixture finishes to the walls

Getting the order right is a big part of a clean remodel trim-out.

Permits out in rural Clark County

Yacolt is at the north end of Clark County, outside any city. Electrical permits out here go through Washington L&I, not a city, and the inspection gets scheduled on L&I’s route.
