Crowded Panel Swapped Out in Hazel Dell, Vancouver, WA

Some panels haven’t failed yet but are headed there. Every space full, wires looping across the bus because there was nowhere else to go, and labels that stopped being right two owners ago. That was the panel in this Hazel Dell home, and we swapped it out in a day.

What a full panel costs you

A panel with no open spaces isn’t just a problem for the next project. It changes how everything gets wired from then on:

• Every addition needs a tandem breaker or a subpanel, whether that’s the right fix or not
• Circuits get shared that shouldn’t be, because nobody wants to open the panel again
• There’s no room to add AFCI or GFCI breakers
• An EV charger, heat pump or hot tub turns into a much bigger job

Re-landing the circuits takes the day

Pulling the old panel takes an hour. Moving thirty-some circuits into the new one takes the rest of the day, and that’s where the quality shows:

1. Label before you cut. We trace and tag every circuit while the old panel’s still readable.
2. Run the wires neatly. In the new panel photo, the wires run down the sides and turn into the breakers instead of crossing over the bus. That keeps the panel easy to work on and keeps heat off the connections.
3. Write the directory last. After everything’s in and tested, not copied from the old card.

The monitor below the panel

We mounted an energy monitor below the panel. It’s a small add, but now the homeowner can see what the house is drawing in real time instead of ignoring a metal box they open twice a decade.

It’s also handy before adding something big. If an EV charger or heat pump is coming in the next year or two, a few months of real usage numbers is a better way to size it than a guess.
