200-Amp Service Relocation and Panel Replacement in Ridgefield, WA
A rural Ridgefield home's overhead service moved to the southwest corner of the house on a new 200-amp meter main with an emergency disconnect, and the original paint-covered 100-amp basement panel was replaced with every existing circuit re-landed.

- Disconnected and removed the original overhead service and relocated it to the southwest corner of the house
- Installed a new 200-amp overhead service with a meter main disconnect, mast, ground bonding and mast support per WAC and NEC
- Replaced the original 100-amp basement panel with a 200-amp panel and re-landed every existing circuit
- Added surge protection at the panel plus AFCI and GFCI protection where the code calls for it
- Ran a dedicated 50-amp circuit to the southeast corner of the house for the homeowner's RV
Most panel upgrades stay where the old panel was. This one moved. On a pre-1980 home in Ridgefield, Washington, the overhead service came in at the wrong corner of the house, the original 100-amp panel sat full in the basement, and the homeowner wanted a 50-amp circuit for an RV on top of it. Newman Electric pulled the old service, set a new 200-amp meter main at the southwest corner, and rebuilt the panel from there.
Why the service moved instead of staying put
Relocating a service drop is more work than swapping a panel in place, and it is worth it when the original service point fights the house. Moving to the southwest corner did three things at once:
- Put the meter main where the utility drop actually wants to land, on a clean run of siding with a straight shot up the mast
- Shortened the path to the basement panel, so the service conductors are not wandering through the structure
- Got the equipment out of the way of the finished stone skirt and the landscaping the homeowner had just put in
The mast is bonded and supported per WAC and NEC requirements, and the grounding electrode conductor runs straight down into the ground at the base of the wall. Washington runs on the 2023 NEC as of April 2024, so a service change like this is inspected against current rules, not the ones the house was built under.
The red label on the meter main is not decoration
The EMERGENCY DISCONNECT / SERVICE DISCONNECT label on the new meter main is there because NEC 230.85 requires an outdoor emergency disconnect on a one or two family dwelling when the service is replaced. It gives the fire department a way to kill the whole house from outside without going in.
This is the single biggest thing that surprises homeowners about upgrading a home’s service panel in Washington today. If your old service was a plain meter socket with the disconnect only inside, a replacement will not look like what came off the wall. Re-landing every circuit from a pre-1980 panel
The old panel told the story before anyone opened it: recessed in the wall, coated in white overspray from some past remodel, breakers crowded shoulder to shoulder, and a neutral bar that had seen better decades.
Bringing that many existing circuits into a new 200-amp panel means dealing with what is actually in the walls of a house this age. On this property that included aluminum branch wiring, which changes how terminations get made and is worth knowing about whether or not you ever do a full aluminum branch wiring replacement. Every circuit came into the new panel identified and landed, rather than the old panel being left live as a mystery box.
Two protections went in that the original panel never had:
- Surge protection at the panel, so the whole house sits behind one device instead of a scatter of power strips. Our take on surge protection for the whole house covers where it helps and where it does not.
- AFCI and GFCI protection where the code calls for it. NEC 210.12 pulls AFCI into 15 and 20 amp living-space circuits once they are modified, and the two devices do genuinely different jobs, which we explain in how AFCI and GFCI protection differ.
The 50-amp RV circuit at the other end of the house
The last piece was a dedicated 50-amp circuit run out to the southeast corner for the homeowner’s RV. Doing it during the service upgrade is the cheap moment to do it: the panel is open, there is capacity to spare at 200 amps, and nobody has to come back and find room later. That is the general argument for handling dedicated circuits while the panel is already apart, whether the load is an RV, a shop, or a hot tub.
