Two panels, one house, one day. This Vancouver home had aging load centers in two places, a garage panel and a hallway panel, and Newman Electric replaced both on the same visit rather than making it two projects with two shutdowns.

What a Pushmatic actually is

The garage panel carried a blue ITE Pushmatic badge. If you have not seen one, they are unmistakable once you open the door: instead of a toggle, each breaker is a push button that you press to trip and press again to reset.

They were common through the middle of the last century and they have not been made in decades. The practical problems are all downstream of that:

  • Breakers are hard to source, and what you can find is used or new-old-stock at collector prices
  • The mechanism stiffens with age, and a breaker that is hard to push is a breaker whose trip behaviour nobody should be relying on
  • No AFCI or GFCI options exist in the format, so you cannot bring circuits up to current protection without leaving the panel
  • Testing is awkward, because there is no visible handle position telling you the state at a glance

None of that means a Pushmatic is failing today. It means the panel has no future, and every electrical improvement in the house runs through it. Why both panels came out together

Doing the two panels on one visit is not just convenience. On a house wired across two load centers, the circuits interact: feeders, shared neutrals from an earlier era, and a directory on each door that only makes sense next to the other one.

Replacing them together means the whole picture gets sorted once:

  1. One power outage for the household instead of two.
  2. Circuits get traced across both panels while everything is open and identifiable.
  3. The directories agree at the end, because they were written at the same time.

The typed directory is the deliverable

The hallway panel went back with a typed directory and a surge protective device sitting at the bus with its status showing through the door.

A directory sounds like a small thing next to the copper. It is the part the homeowner uses. Every future electrician, inspector and appliance install starts by opening that door, and a panel that is honestly labeled saves an hour of tracing every single time.
