Outdoor Tesla Wall Connector on a Pergola Post in Kalama, WA

We put an outdoor Tesla Wall Connector on a pergola post at a Kalama home with rooftop solar. We added a dedicated 240-volt circuit in the Square D Homeline panel without touching the solar breakers.

Scope of Work

  • Mounted an outdoor-rated Tesla Wall Connector on a pergola post
  • Ran a dedicated 240-volt circuit from the Square D Homeline panel
  • Put in 2 slim 15-amp breakers to make room for the EV circuit
  • Ran metal conduit along the pergola
  • Worked around the rooftop solar and its breakers
  • Pulled the L&I permit and passed inspection

We put an outdoor Tesla Wall Connector on a pergola post at this home in Kalama, up in Cowlitz County. The homeowner already had rooftop solar wired into the Square D Homeline panel, so the job was adding a dedicated 240-volt circuit for the charger without messing with the solar breakers.

Why mount it outside

The Tesla Wall Connector is rated for outdoor use, so you’ve got more options for where it goes. Here, the pergola post gave us a clean spot you can see from the driveway, and we ran the conduit along the pergola from the panel without drilling through a single finished wall.

Mounting outside makes sense when the garage is detached, or just isn’t where you park and plug in. A weatherproof charger on a pergola post works like a well-placed outdoor outlet, and it goes well with pergola and outdoor lighting on the same structure.

Working around the solar

The panel already had breakers for two solar arrays plus all the house circuits. It was nearly full, so we had to free up two spaces before the new 240-volt breaker could go in. We swapped two regular breakers on small circuits for two slim 15-amp breakers, which freed up the room without downsizing anything that mattered.

The solar kept working normally after we turned on the new circuit. During the day, the charger runs partly on solar, and on grid power the rest of the time.

Why a dedicated 240-volt circuit

A Tesla Wall Connector can charge at up to 48 amps on a 60-amp circuit, adding about 44 miles of range per hour. On a smaller circuit it steps down on its own. Our Level 1 vs. Level 2 EV charger guide compares the two for daily driving.

You need 240 volts for Level 2 at home. A regular 120-volt outlet (Level 1) only adds 3 to 5 miles of range per hour, which isn’t enough for daily driving in most EVs.

Thinking about a battery later?

People with rooftop solar often ask about adding a battery (Tesla Powerwall, Enphase, FranklinWH). That’s a bigger job that involves the panel, a transfer switch and the utility’s interconnection agreement, so we usually quote it separately. It’s worth bringing up because it affects panel planning. If a battery’s likely in the next few years, size the panel and service for it now instead of redoing it later.
