Hardwired EV Charger on the Outside of a Camas Garage

We hardwired a Level 2 charger on the outside wall of a Camas garage, next to the driveway. The panel was out of spaces, so we put in slim breakers to free up room for the new 60-amp circuit.

Scope of Work

  • Put in two slim breakers to open up space in a full panel
  • Added a 60-amp, two-pole breaker for the charger
  • Ran the circuit outside in flexible conduit along the siding
  • Hardwired the charger on the garage wall by the driveway

This Camas homeowner wanted their charger on the outside of the garage, right where the car parks in the driveway. Ryan and the crew hardwired a Level 2 charger on the siding and fed it with a new 60-amp circuit.

Making room in the panel

The panel had a 200-amp main but no open spaces. A 60-amp charger breaker is two-pole, so it needs two spaces side by side. We swapped two regular 15 or 20-amp breakers for slim breakers, which carry the same circuits in less room. That opened up the spaces for the new 60-amp breaker.

Slim breakers only go where the panel is listed for them. When a panel can’t take them, the next step is a subpanel or a bigger panel.

Running it outside

From the panel we brought the circuit out and along the siding in gray flexible conduit, then up to the charger. Mounting outside keeps the cable short to the car and leaves the garage floor clear.

On a 60-amp circuit a charger can run at up to 48 amps. Our page on outdoor and garage EV charger installs has more on choosing a spot, and our guide to picking a home charger covers the hardware.
