50-Amp EV Charging Outlet Beside the Panel in Ridgefield, WA

A dedicated 50-amp, 240-volt circuit and EV charging outlet set right beside the garage panel in a Ridgefield home, run a short distance in EMT, so the homeowner's portable Level 2 charger plugs straight in.

Scope of Work

  • Added a dedicated 50-amp, 240-volt circuit at the panel
  • Ran a short EMT conduit along the wall from the panel
  • Installed a 240-volt EV charging outlet at plug-in height

This Ridgefield homeowner already had a portable Level 2 charger, so they didn’t need a wall-mounted unit. They needed a place to plug it in. Newman Electric added a dedicated 50-amp, 240-volt circuit and an EV charging outlet right beside the garage panel, in a short run of EMT.

Outlet or hardwired charger?

Plenty of EV owners have a portable charger that came with the car, or one they bought to travel with. A 240-volt outlet lets that same charger run at Level 2 at home. It’s the simplest setup there is when the parking spot is near the panel.

The tradeoff, which we explain before every install:

  • An outlet is flexible. The charger can come off the wall and go in the trunk.
  • A hardwired charger skips the plug connection entirely, which avoids the heat problems cheap receptacles can develop under hours of continuous charging.
  • Either way, the outlet should be a heavy-duty, EV-rated receptacle, not a bargain one.

Our guide to Level 1 vs Level 2 charging at home covers how much charging speed each setup really gets you.

Why beside the panel

Putting the outlet right next to the panel keeps the run short: a few feet of EMT along the wall instead of a long route across the garage. Short runs cost less and need no upsizing for voltage drop, and EMT protects the conductors at a height where they could get bumped.

The panel is a Square D Homeline with a SurgeBreaker whole-house surge protector already installed, which protects the car’s charging electronics along with everything else in the house.

EV charging in Ridgefield

Most newer Ridgefield homes have the panel in the garage, which makes this kind of install quick. If yours is somewhere less convenient, see our EV charger installation in Ridgefield section, or call 360-828-7143 to get a plug-in charger circuit set up.
