Residential Electrician
Residential Electrician in Vancouver, WA
580+ residential jobs completed in Vancouver
Vancouver has houses from every decade since the 1920s, and the wiring tells you which one you're standing in. After this many jobs across the city, we can guess the panel brand from the street. Below is what we find in each era of Vancouver home, and the work it leads to.
01
Pre-1950 Homes
Hough · Arnada · Shumway · Rose Village
Fuse boxes, 60-amp services, two-prong outlets, and knob and tube still live in some of these walls. A modern kitchen alone can outrun the service, before anyone mentions a heat pump.
Common work: knob and tube replacement and a service upgrade to 200 amps.
02
1960s to 1990s Homes
Orchards · Minnehaha · Cascade Park · Hazel Dell
100-amp panels that worked fine for 40 years, plus a fair number of Federal Pacific, Zinsco and Pushmatic panels. Homes from roughly 1965 to 1973 can have aluminum branch wiring.
Common work: panel replacement, heat pump circuits, and remodel wiring.
03
2000s and Newer
Fishers Landing · Felida · Salmon Creek
200-amp panels and decent wiring, but built before anyone planned for an EV in the garage, a hot tub on the patio, and a sauna out back all on one service.
Common work: EV charger circuits, hot tub wiring, and lighting upgrades.
EV Chargers
EV Charger Installation in Vancouver, WA
30+ EV charger jobs completed in Vancouver
Most of the EV chargers we put in around Vancouver are hardwired Level 2 units on a 40- to 60-amp circuit, and many of them go in without a panel upgrade. We run a load calculation first so you know before we start. On a 1996 home this June the Eaton panel had room for a full 60-amp circuit, so the Autel charger went in without touching the service.
Garage layout drives the price more than the charger brand. An Emporia hung right beside the main panel in a newer Hazel Dell home was a short whip and a few hours. A Tesla Wall Connector on the outside of a Minnehaha garage took a 60-amp run through the wall and an exterior-rated mount. A Wallbox in a Fishers Landing garage landed somewhere in between.
Inside city limits the permit goes through the City of Vancouver, and we book that inspection for you.

24/7 Emergency
Emergency Electrician in Vancouver, WA
15+ emergency jobs completed in Vancouver
Call 360-828-7143 any hour. The shop is on NE 121st Ave, so an after-hours call from Cascade Park, Hazel Dell or downtown isn't waiting on a truck coming down from Longview.
Call right away for a burning smell at an outlet or the panel, a breaker that trips again the moment you reset it, half the house dead after a windstorm, or water anywhere near wiring. One Vancouver customer reached Ryan on Thanksgiving Eve after her range took out a 1980s breaker box, and Ryan had it working again before 20+ guests showed up the next day.
If the trouble is on the utility side of the meter, such as a service drop pulled down by a tree, call Clark Public Utilities first. Everything on the house side is ours.
"Great service with amazing pricing. Installed a 240v outlet 40 amp ckt next to panel my panel and added a 50ka surge protector. Permit included in job cost. Same day installation. Continue the great work!"
Repair & Troubleshooting
Electrical Repair & Troubleshooting in Vancouver, WA
150+ troubleshooting and repair jobs completed in Vancouver
Troubleshooting is the call we take most in Vancouver. The service call is $225 for the first hour, and that hour includes the diagnosis plus whatever repair fits inside it. No guessing, no swapping parts until something works.
- Breaker keeps tripping: overloaded circuit, a short, or a worn breaker
- Dead outlets: a tripped GFCI two rooms away or a loose backstab
- Flickering lights: loose connections at the fixture, switch or panel
- Half the house out: a lost leg at the panel or the meter
- Warm cover plates: arcing behind the wall, so call now
- Fans and fixtures dead after DIY work: open splices left behind
That last one is common in Vancouver rentals. For a property manager's vacant unit, a dead bathroom fan turned out to be an open connection a handyman left in the wall. We traced it, fixed it, and the unit was ready to list.

"This guy! Newman Electric I cannot even tell you how much Ryan rocks. Called him Thanksgiving Eve because my range caused my whole breaker box (from the 80's) to go out. I was pretty bummed.. what an awful feeling having 20+ people coming over the next day i was freaking out. Not only did Ryan and his co worker come over and make it work. They were also awesome about it. I do not have enough gratitude to ever thank them enough. I highly recommend Newman Electric to everyone they are great and awesome."
Panel Upgrades
Electrical Panel Upgrade in Vancouver, WA
45+ panel upgrade jobs completed in Vancouver
Panel work in Vancouver comes in three flavors. A 100-amp panel in a 1970s or 80s ranch that can't take an EV charger or heat pump. A Federal Pacific, Zinsco or Pushmatic panel that should come out no matter what's plugged into it. Or a packed panel in a newer home with no open slots left.
Recent examples: an ITE Pushmatic and a second aging load center replaced in one day with every circuit re-landed, and a packed original panel in Hazel Dell swapped in a single day with the directory rewritten so the next person can read it. On a full service upgrade we coordinate the disconnect and reconnect with Clark Public Utilities, and the 2023 NEC now requires an outdoor emergency disconnect on the new service (NEC 230.85). That is built into the quote, not added later.
Ryan reviews every panel job before the crew starts. It's the one piece of equipment every other circuit in the house depends on.

Laundry-Closet Panel Moved Outside to a 200-Amp Meter Main in Vancouver, WA
"Very professional, responsive and right on schedule. Very clean job and quite reasonably priced, especially considering this was not a very big job. Ran 50 amp service from house panel to sub panel in shop."
Generators
Generator Installation in Vancouver, WA
East Vancouver catches the east wind coming out of the Columbia Gorge, and the January 2024 ice storm showed how long a winter outage can drag on. That's when the generator calls start.
Two setups cover most Vancouver homes. A portable generator with an inlet box and a panel interlock is the budget route: roll it out, plug it in, and choose which circuits run. A standby generator with an automatic transfer switch starts on its own, but it needs a gas line, a pad, and a load calculation to size it properly.
We handle the electrical side of either one, permit included. What we won't do is backfeed a house through a dryer outlet, and we'd ask you not to either. It puts voltage on the utility lines that line crews are working on.
"James did everything I expected and quickly with a minimum of power interruptions, which is important because my wife is on continuous supplemental oxygen and we had to use a tank for less than an hour while James completed the wiring. He hauled my 7.5K generator down to the garage and fired it up to test that all worked as needed. Thanks Newman and James."
Rewiring
Whole House Rewiring & Knob and Tube Replacement in Vancouver, WA
50+ rewire and remodel jobs completed in Vancouver
Vancouver's older neighborhoods, including Hough, Arnada and Shumway, still have knob and tube in walls and attics. Some insurers won't write a new policy until it's gone, and none of it was built for today's loads.
A rewire doesn't have to happen all at once. One north Vancouver kitchen rewire took out the last of the knob and tube, moved the panel and added can lighting. On another older home we replaced the remaining knob and tube, set a new 200-amp meter main and panel, and brought the grounding up to code in the same project.
Homes built from about 1965 to 1973 can have aluminum branch wiring instead. That doesn't automatically mean a rewire. Approved connectors at every outlet, switch and splice are the accepted repair, and we'll tell you which one your house needs.

Ryan and Garrett worked out a schedule and were able to get all the work done in a few days time. They were open and answered all questions throughout the process. They also worked with my schedule."
Lighting
Lighting Installation in Vancouver, WA
200+ lighting jobs completed in Vancouver
After outlets and switches, lighting is the most common job on our Vancouver list. It covers a lot of ground.
A dropped soffit came out of a room off a Vancouver kitchen and 10 to 12 canless LED downlights went in to match the kitchen. A wagon-wheel chandelier went up over a Salmon Creek stairwell at 18 feet. Three bedrooms in Hazel Dell each got four LED downlights on a dimmer. In Orchards, a cast post lamp that had been reduced to a bare bulb on taped wiring got re-fed and rebuilt.
Before a fixture goes up we confirm the box is rated for its weight, and for ceiling fans we use a fan-rated box. Recessed lights in insulated ceilings get IC-rated housings.

Heat Pumps & HVAC
Heat Pump & HVAC Wiring in Vancouver, WA
70+ heat pump and HVAC jobs completed in Vancouver
More Vancouver homeowners are trading gas furnaces and old AC units for heat pumps, and every one needs a 240-volt circuit sized to the nameplate on the outdoor unit. We're the electrical side for HVAC installers, including Advantage Heating & Cooling, so the system gets wired and inspected on the HVAC crew's timeline.
A typical changeout is a 2-pole breaker sized to the unit, an outdoor disconnect within sight of the condenser, a sealtight whip, and the GFCI service receptacle near the furnace that gets skipped more than it should. On a manufactured home in Orchards we also added a single-phase line monitor so the new heat pump shuts down cleanly when voltage sags.
If your panel is already full, we'll check whether a load calculation supports the new circuit before the HVAC company orders equipment.

Panel Swap and Heat Pump Hookup for an A/C Replacement in Vancouver, WA
"I have to shout out Ryan for going out of his way to come save us tonight. After having an HVAC tech out two days in a row, I was really hoping to have AC restored in my home. What we thought was an HVAC issue turned out to be a breaker issue and we thought we were going to be sweating through the night once again. Newman Electric was the first place I called and I’m super glad I did. Ryan was probably on his way home for the day but diverted over to our house to help us out. He charged a fair rate for emergency service and was in and out in less than 15 minutes. Best part is.. I might actually sleep through the night tonight now that my house is finally cooling down. We’ll be hiring Newman Electric again in the future, as it sounds like we’re due for a panel swap and their pricing is good. As a dispatcher for a local plumbing company, I know good service when I see it. Thanks again Ryan for helping us out tonight! We really owe you one. 10/10 will recommend to friends and family."
Hot Tubs & Saunas
Hot Tub & Spa Wiring in Vancouver, WA
10+ hot tub and spa jobs completed in Vancouver
A new hot tub circuit on a single-story Vancouver home runs $800 to $1,800 for a circuit up to 50 amps, as listed on our pricing page. That includes the GFCI disconnect, placed at least five feet from the tub and within sight of it.
Saunas and cold plunges follow the same rules with different numbers. At a 1943 Vancouver home we wired a Harvia barrel sauna heater and a dedicated circuit for the cold plunge next to it, with the feeder run so it doesn't cut across the yard where it'll get dug up later.
Buying a tub? Send us the spec sheet before delivery day. Some 240-volt tubs need a 60-amp circuit, and it's easier to plan the run before the tub is sitting on the pad.
Remodels
Kitchen, Bath & Remodel Electrician in Vancouver, WA
Remodels are where general contractors call us, and we show up on the day the schedule says. We rough in and trim out kitchens, bathrooms and basements across Vancouver.
On a 1993 Hazel Dell remodel we hung island pendants and fished a new pantry microwave outlet up from the crawlspace. A 1987 Orchards job needed a hallway thermostat moved to clear a crawlspace hatch. In Felida, two new bathrooms got 6-inch cans and Panasonic exhaust fans. In another Orchards kitchen we moved a range circuit 15 feet through the crawl space for a gas-to-electric conversion.
Kitchens need at least two 20-amp small-appliance circuits and GFCI protection on countertop outlets, and any modified circuit in a living space needs AFCI protection under NEC 210.12. We plan for that at rough-in so the inspection is a formality.

FAQ
Questions About Electrical
Work in Vancouver, WA
How much does an electrician cost in Vancouver, WA?
A Newman Electric service call in Vancouver is $225 for the first hour, and that hour covers the diagnosis plus whatever repair fits inside it. Replacing up to three outlets or switches is a flat $225. A new hot tub circuit runs $800 to $1,800 on a single-story home. Panel upgrades, rewires and EV chargers depend on the house, so we price those with a free on-site estimate. Every published rate is on our pricing page.
Who issues electrical permits in Vancouver, WA?
Inside Vancouver city limits, the City of Vancouver issues electrical permits and does its own inspections (360-487-7890). Addresses with a Vancouver mailing address in unincorporated Clark County, including Hazel Dell, Salmon Creek, Felida, Orchards and Minnehaha, go through Washington L&I instead (360-896-2300). Newman Electric pulls the right permit for your address and schedules the inspection.
Can my Vancouver home handle a Level 2 EV charger without a panel upgrade?
Many can. We run a load calculation on your panel before quoting. Plenty of Vancouver homes with 200-amp service have room for a 40- to 60-amp charger circuit as-is. Older 100-amp panels in 1970s and 80s homes are the ones that sometimes need a load management device or a service upgrade first.
Does Newman Electric offer 24/7 emergency service in Vancouver?
Yes. Call 360-828-7143 any time. The shop is on NE 121st Ave in Vancouver, so most of the city is a short drive. If the problem is on the utility side, such as a downed service drop, call Clark Public Utilities first and then call us for anything on the house side of the meter.
Do you do commercial electrical work in Vancouver?
Yes. About four in ten of our Vancouver jobs are commercial: tenant improvements, warehouse equipment circuits, office data cabling, property-wide lighting for apartment and manufactured-home communities, and service work for property managers. We work directly with general contractors and pull commercial permits through the City of Vancouver.
Do you offer free estimates in Vancouver, WA?
Yes, on project work like panel upgrades, EV chargers, rewires and remodels. Ryan or one of the crew comes out, looks at the job and gives you a written price with no trip charge. Repair calls where we diagnose and fix on the spot are billed at the $225 first-hour service rate.
