Panel Swap and Heat Pump Hookup for an A/C Replacement in Vancouver, WA

Advantage Heating & Cooling swapped an A/C and air handler for a Daikin heat pump in east Vancouver, and the old panel was not coming along. Newman Electric replaced it with a 200-amp Siemens panel, re-grounded and bonded the service, and reconnected the heat pump and air handler the same day on a City of Vancouver permit.

Scope of Work

  • Replaced the original panel in kind with a 200-amp Siemens load center
  • Re-grounded and bonded the service while the panel was out
  • Added a whole-house surge protector at the new panel
  • Reconnected the new Daikin heat pump and air handler
  • Mounted the outdoor disconnect and the partner-supplied surge protector at the unit
  • Added a dedicated GFCI outlet for the condensate pump

Advantage Heating & Cooling was replacing an A/C and air handler with a Daikin heat pump and a new air handler at this east Vancouver home. The original panel was the weak link, so Newman Electric swapped it on the morning of the install and had both new units reconnected the same day.

Why the panel came out first

The original load center still carried the certificate of occupancy sticker from when the house was built. Rather than hang a brand-new inverter heat pump off it, the job included a like-in-kind panel swap: a new 200-amp Siemens panel in the same stud bay, every circuit re-landed, and the service re-grounded and bonded while everything was open. It’s the most common way a heat pump circuit turns into a panel job. Our heat pump and mini split electrical guide covers when that happens and when it doesn’t.

Protecting the new equipment

Modern heat pumps run on variable-speed inverter boards that don’t tolerate surges well. This setup protects them twice:

  • A whole-house surge protector at the new panel, sitting right under the main breaker.
  • A surge protector at the outdoor unit, supplied by Advantage, mounted beside the disconnect.

The outdoor disconnect sits within sight of the unit, with flexible conduit down to the Daikin, as the code requires.

The small stuff that keeps a system running

A new high-efficiency system makes condensate, and the pump that moves it needs power. We added a dedicated GFCI outlet for the condensate pump beside the air handler instead of leaving it on an extension cord.

The permit went through the City of Vancouver. For other examples of this kind of partner work, see our heat pump wiring in Vancouver section. If you’re replacing HVAC equipment and aren’t sure your panel can keep up, call 360-828-7143 or have us check the panel before the install.

I have to shout out Ryan for going out of his way to come save us tonight. After having an HVAC tech out two days in a row, I was really hoping to have AC restored in my home. What we thought was an HVAC issue turned out to be a breaker issue and we thought we were going to be sweating through the night once again. Newman Electric was the first place I called and I’m super glad I did. Ryan was probably on his way home for the day but diverted over to our house to help us out. He charged a fair rate for emergency service and was in and out in less than 15 minutes. Best part is.. I might actually sleep through the night tonight now that my house is finally cooling down. We’ll be hiring Newman Electric again in the future, as it sounds like we’re due for a panel swap and their pricing is good. As a dispatcher for a local plumbing company, I know good service when I see it. Thanks again Ryan for helping us out tonight! We really owe you one. 10/10 will recommend to friends and family.
