Hot Tub Wiring in Brush Prairie, WA (Spa Circuit + Powered Cover)

Wired in a new hot tub at a Brush Prairie home: a dedicated 240V GFCI-protected circuit run to the spa pack in liquidtight conduit, plus a separate 15-amp circuit for the powered cover, landed in a panel that already had a generator interlock.

Scope of Work

  • Wired in a new hot tub on a 240V GFCI-protected circuit
  • Ran the feed to the spa pack in liquidtight conduit
  • Added a separate dedicated 15-amp circuit for the powered cover
  • Landed both circuits in the home's existing panel

Newman Electric wired in a new hot tub at a home in Brush Prairie, WA. The job had two parts the homeowner asked for up front: power the spa itself, and add a dedicated circuit for its powered cover. Both got their own home in the panel, done to the code that governs water and electricity sharing a backyard.

Why a hot tub is not just “another 240 circuit”

A spa lives outdoors, holds a few hundred gallons of water, and people sit in it. NEC Article 680 treats it accordingly, and so do we:

  • GFCI protection on the spa circuit, so the slightest leakage to ground trips it instantly
  • A disconnect within sight of the tub so it can be killed before anyone services the pump
  • Liquidtight conduit for the whip into the spa pack, because the run is exposed to weather and movement

We ran the feed in liquidtight along the base of the cedar cabinet and into the spa pack, then landed the circuit on the right breaker for the unit’s nameplate. That combination, GFCI plus an in-sight disconnect plus weatherproof conduit, is the whole reason a hot tub install is an electrician’s job and not a weekend project.

The powered cover gets its own circuit

This tub has a motorized cover, and the homeowner wanted it wired properly rather than sharing power with the spa. So it got a dedicated 15-amp circuit of its own:

  1. The cover motor runs independently of the spa pack
  2. Tripping or servicing one never takes down the other
  3. The panel directory now reads clean: one line for the hot tub, one for the cover

It is a small addition, but keeping the cover on its own circuit is the kind of detail that makes the system easy to live with and easy to troubleshoot later.

A panel already built for backyard loads

This home’s panel was in good shape for the addition. It already had a generator interlock set up for standby power, and enough capacity to take the spa and cover circuits without crowding. On a rural Brush Prairie property where the power can flicker in a winter storm, having the generator side already handled is smart, and adding a big load like a hot tub is exactly the moment to make sure the panel can carry it. If you are not sure yours can, our guide to whether your panel can carry it is a good gut check.
