50-Amp GFCI RV Outlet Run Underground in Kelso, WA
We added a 50-amp GFCI-protected circuit for a new RV spot in Kelso. The homeowner dug the trench, we laid 3/4-inch PVC to a 50-amp outlet on a post, and made room in a full panel with tandem breakers.

Scope of Work
- Swapped two breakers for Eaton tandems to free up space in the panel
- Added a 50-amp GFCI breaker for the RV circuit
- Laid 3/4-inch PVC in the trench and put the 50-amp outlet on a post
This Kelso homeowner set up a new spot for an RV and needed power out to it. They dug the trench, and we did the rest: a 50-amp GFCI-protected circuit in 3/4-inch PVC out to a 50-amp outlet on a post, about 75 feet from the house.
Making room in a full panel
The panel didn’t have open spaces for a new two-pole breaker. Instead of adding a subpanel, we swapped a 20-amp and a 15-amp breaker for Eaton tandem breakers. A tandem fits two circuits in one space, which freed up room for the new 50-amp GFCI breaker. It only works when the panel is listed for tandems in those spaces.
The run out to the RV
From the panel the circuit leaves the house through an LB and runs down the wall in PVC, then along the trench to the post. We pulled #6 copper for the 50-amp circuit. The outlet sits in a weatherproof box with an in-use cover, so the RV can stay plugged in when it rains.
We checked the conduit depth with a tape before the trench was filled back in. Having the homeowner dig the trench saved them a good chunk of labor.
Why GFCI on an RV outlet
The current code calls for GFCI protection on outdoor outlets like this one. Putting it in the breaker keeps the protection at the panel, out of the weather. Our dedicated 240-volt circuit work page covers RV, shop and hot tub circuits. We pulled the L&I permit and set up the inspections.
