Scope of Work
- Hardwired an Autel MaxiCharger on a 60-amp circuit
- Put the breaker in the home's Eaton panel
- Mounted the charger a few feet from the panel
- Wired it for the charger's full output
We put in a 60-amp EV charging circuit at a 1996 home in Vancouver, WA, feeding a hardwired Autel MaxiCharger. The homeowner didn’t just want a charger that works. They wanted it wired to charge as fast as the unit can. That comes down to the circuit, and this one’s built for full output.
Why 60 amps matters
You can set a charger up on different circuit sizes, and the breaker decides how fast it charges:
- A 60-amp breaker lets the charger pull up to 48 amps continuously, the most a 60-amp circuit allows
- That’s about 11 kilowatts, or tens of miles of range per hour
- Put it on a smaller circuit and the charger gets turned down, no matter what the car can take
So the breaker size sets the top charging speed. We sized the wire for a continuous 48-amp load, put the 60-amp breaker in the Eaton panel, and the charger now runs at its top speed.
Why hardwired at this amperage
At 48 amps for hours at a time, you hardwire it instead of plugging it in:
- There’s no outlet to heat up or wear out under a long, heavy load
- Hardwiring is what lets the charger run at the full 48 amps
- It’s a permanent connection inside the garage
Plug-in chargers are fine at lower amperages. For full speed, hardwiring is the safe way to get there.
A short run
The charger’s a few feet from the panel, so the 60-amp circuit had a short trip in conduit. Short run, big circuit, full speed. If you’re deciding how to set up your own charger, our guide to which charger is right for you covers how circuit size and charger choice go together.
