Why charger-next-to-panel is the cheapest install

The single biggest variable in what an EV install costs is the distance from the panel to the charger. Put the two within a few feet of each other and most of the cost disappears:

• A short flexible whip runs straight from the panel to the charger, no long conduit run across the garage
• Minimal wire, so no upsizing for voltage drop over distance
• Less labor, because there is almost nothing to route

The home’s Square D QO panel was a 2022 build with open spaces, so the dedicated 240V circuit landed without a sub-panel or a service upgrade. Hardwiring the charger, rather than using a plug, gives the most reliable connection and the full output the unit is rated for. While we were on site, the homeowner also wanted a 240V garage outlet for other equipment, so we scoped that out and gave them a number before we left. That is the advantage of having the electrician already there with the panel open: a second small job is cheaper bundled than as its own trip.
