Hardwired Level 2 EV Charger in Vancouver, WA (Mounted Right at the Panel)

Hardwired Level 2 EV charger install in a 2022 Vancouver home where the charger went within a few feet of the panel: a short flexible whip straight from the Square D QO panel to the charger, the cleanest, lowest-cost version of an EV install.

Scope of Work

  • Hardwired a Level 2 EV charger in a 2022 home garage
  • Mounted the charger within a few feet of the panel
  • Ran a short flexible whip straight from the Square D QO panel
  • Quoted a separate 240V garage outlet while on site

This is what an EV charger install looks like when everything lines up. Newman Electric hardwired a Level 2 charging circuit in a 2022 home in Vancouver, WA, and because the homeowner was happy to put the charger right next to the panel, the whole job was short, clean, and easy on the wallet.

Why charger-next-to-panel is the cheapest install

The single biggest variable in what an EV install costs is the distance from the panel to the charger. Put the two within a few feet of each other and most of the cost disappears:

  • A short flexible whip runs straight from the panel to the charger, no long conduit run across the garage
  • Minimal wire, so no upsizing for voltage drop over distance
  • Less labor, because there is almost nothing to route

When people ask why one EV quote is half another, this is usually the answer. The charger costs the same either way. The run is what moves the price, as our guide to the cost of a home EV charger lays out.

A modern panel that just had room

The home’s Square D QO panel was a 2022 build with open spaces, so the dedicated 240V circuit landed without a sub-panel or a service upgrade. Hardwiring the charger, rather than using a plug, gives the most reliable connection and the full output the unit is rated for. If you are still deciding between charger types and how they mount, our Level 1 versus Level 2 charging guide covers the tradeoffs.

One trip, two things handled

While we were on site, the homeowner also wanted a 240V garage outlet for other equipment, so we scoped that out and gave them a number before we left. That is the advantage of having the electrician already there with the panel open: a second small job is cheaper bundled than as its own trip.
